Invitational bowling competition a great success
A very successful Invitational Pairs was concluded at
Cooma Bowling Club last Friday with 56 players taking
part of whom 45 were visitors from Victoria, Blakehurst,
Murray River, Deniliquin, Canberra, Corrimal, Bega, Tura
Beach and Merimbula.
This event brought 45 visitors to town for at least two
days and no doubt they spent some money, not only at
the Bowling Club but also on accommodation in town.
On day one all played three games of 14 ends with
points accumulating and carrying forward to day two
with two games of 14 ends with total for two days
scores to decide the distribution of prize money.
First place went to former Cooma resident, Robert
(Stumpy) Wallis and partner Alan Rowlinson (Tura Beach);
second Geoff Frost and Leo Gore (Blakehurst); third
Adam Bateup (Vic) and Colin Roberson (Cooma); fourth
David (Froggey) Croker and Ron Croker, Merimbula); fifth
Geoff Venables and Gordon Cox (Cooma); sixth John
Croker (Deniliquin) and Terry Croker (Cooma).
Best score pair not in prize list day one Kel Duncombe
and Graham Burton (Tura Beach) and day two John
Barnes and Peter McDonald.
Most of the Players have indicated a desire to
return next year and every endeavour will be made
to accommodate them in 2018. Major Sponsors for
the day were Cooma Ex-Service Club and Bowling
Club Insurance Brokers with a host of local individual
sponsors and helpers and the very welcome morning tea
goodies by the ladies.
Due to the necessity to prepare the greens and
surrounds for the invitational pairs there were no social
bowls last Wednesday, however these will resume
today. Saturday’s social bowls were restricted as far as
numbers were concerned with just a rink of pairs and
one of triples.
Grae Adams, Mario Frezza and Renate Winckel were
having a great contest with Bronwyn Abel, Max Butler
and Mike Mannile for five ends then dropped five shots
on six and never recovered.
Mike’s team rubbed a bit of salt
in to the wound with seven shots
over the last two ends to win 28/11.
Mary Obermaier and Ken Rees were
never far behind Kathy Abel and Ron
Wainwright with scores either level
or close up to end 15 on which Mary
and Ken scored a four to give them
a handy lead which enabled them to
hang on and win 16/14
