Having been with mcCr since the
beginning, Sarah Allen was surprised
to find she was one of the first patients
to step through the doors of the newly
opened oncology unit at the Cooma
Diagnosed 10 years ago, Sarah
received her first cancer
treatments in Sydney. In
remission, Sarah came
back to Cooma to

But this time, once the
operation was over, Sarah
was able to come back home
and receive her four to five months of
chemotherapy at the Cooma oncology
unit, with her three young children and
husband by her side.
“When I was being treated in
Sydney, I was lucky enough to have
my brother there for support,” says
“There are so many who wouldn’t
have that, and I can’t imagine how
lonely that would feel.
“Being away from my family was one
of the most difficult parts of my cancer.
It put a lot of pressure on my husband,
Andrew, having to care for our three
small children largely on his own.”
Sarah and Andrew live on sheep and
cattle property ‘Kiloran’ near Berridale.

people who find themselves in a similar
situation to my one, including the very
embarrasing experience of taking
some clothes off for a photo shoot for
the Calendar Girls calendar, because I
know what it felt like.”
Once recovered, Sarah decided to
be as healthy as she could be.
“We are so lucky to have these
bodies and I try to promote, especially
to my children, how important it is to
maintain our health and well-being.

Sarah raised $26,000, which went
towards the recent refurbishment of
the oncology unit to allow more room
for families to sit with patients while
they received their treatments.
“I just want people to know that
without mcCr, we wouldn’t have the
oncology unit, or the other support
services we offer. I am so grateful it
was here. I am one of the lucky ones
and I want people to know you can
get through it, and mcCr are here to
help you through it.
“Being part of mcCr is such a
privilege. They are such an inspiring
group of people and I am in awe of
what they have achieved over the last
